Effective Finance Minister & Ineffective Prime Minister.

Effective Finance Minister & ineffective Prime Minister.

Analysis by Firdous Syed, " If PM had quit, he'd have made us proud" (DNA,23/2) hits the nail on the head. Indians were euphoric when Dr.Man Mohan Singh as the Finance Minister liberated us from the permit-license raj in 1991. He had the full political support of late PM P.V.Narasimha Rao. After he was chosen as he PM by UPA, he has lost his touch with Indian reality. He was ready to sacrifice his office to promote Indo-US nuclear deal but not to promote good governance. We all know how that deal was passed in the Loka Sabha and we do not know how expensive the nuclear power would be – dispossession of farmers of their fertile land, untried technology, limit to liabilities in case of accident & radiation threat etc.

In the second edition of UPA he has not been able to stop any of the scams – neither the 2G, nor Commonwealth Games. How one wishes he had resigned when Raja refused his suggestion to auction the spectrum and go down in history as the PM who upheld probity in public life. He has now conceded the JPC demand of the opposition not for sake of good governance but to stop the disruption of the Budget session. One can only say that an effective Finance Minister has become an ineffective Prime Minister. What a fall!
